Biology students earn best poster distinctions at state science conference
Two students in the University of Louisiana at Monroe鈥檚 biology department won Best Poster awards at the 84th Louisiana Academy of Science Annual Meeting on Feb. 27, held at Louisiana State University at Alexandria. Casey Nolan won Best Graduate Poster and Chris Wilson won Best Undergraduate Poster.
Nolan鈥檚 presentation was titled 鈥淏ioclimatic Modeling of Eastern U.S. Land Snail Diversity.鈥� Wilson presented on 鈥淯sing Temporal RNAi to Determine the Function of the Gene nhr-6 During Differentiation of the Spermatheca in C. elegans.鈥�
A group of three freshman biology students, Cassie Clark, Dillon Davis and Mustafa El Sayed, gave a presentation titled 鈥淚solation and Characterization of Mycobacteriphages from Soil Samples in Northeast Louisiana.鈥� Their work was supported by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Other biology undergraduates presenting posters at the conference were Charles Battaglia and Adamou Rimanatou Dodo, both graduating seniors. Several graduate students presented papers at the conference including Alex Fotis, Jessica Wakefield and Erin Basiger.
鈥淭hese students, including our upper level students and our freshman team, represent the excellent work being done in our department,鈥� Dr. Sushma Krishnamurthy said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e very proud of them and all their hard work.鈥�
