CPA Examination and Application Requirements

The Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Examination is now a computer based exam. Currently, an applicant in Louisiana must fulfill the following requirements to be eligible to take the exam:

Education

Bachelor's degree and 150 hours of college credit including:

  • 6 hours Intermediate accounting;
  • 3 hours cost accounting;
  • 3 hours income tax accounting;
  • 3 hours auditing;
  • 9 hours electives; choose one from advanced financial accounting, not-for-profit accounting and accounting theory, and 2 additional accounting courses above the elementary level; and
  • 24 hours of business courses, including at least 3 hours in commercial law as it affects accountancy.

Residence

Applicants must have maintained continuous residence in Louisiana for a period of one year within the two years immediately preceding the date of the scheduled examination.

The Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from The University of Louisiana at Monroe fulfills all of the specific course requirementsdescribed above. However, to complete the 150-hour requirement, 30 hours above the BBA must be earned.
